Democrats do the work; Republicans show up for photo op – Saratogian

Two years ago, Democrats promised to revive America’s innovation economy and delivered on their promise with the CHIPS and Science Act, a once-in-a-generation bill. 187 Republican representatives voted against the bill.

That’s 88% of Republicans in the House of Representatives who were in office in 2022.

We Democrats have promised our voters that we will do everything possible to maintain our international competitiveness and strengthen our economic and national security.

We are committed to developing clean energy solutions, tackling the climate crisis, bringing semiconductor chip manufacturing back to the United States, creating jobs, and creating equitable pathways to the STEM workforce.

We have kept those promises and more, despite Republican efforts to undo them.

In the two years since the passage of the CHIPS and Science Act, our community has reaped the rewards of the efforts my Democratic colleagues and I have made to do our jobs and get the job done for the people.

The Biden-Harris administration’s Invest in America agenda ushers in a new future for our Capital Region communities. With the Inflation Control Act, the bipartisan infrastructure bill, and the CHIPS and Science Act, New York has made incredible progress.

• More than $82 billion in public and private investment has been made to support semiconductor manufacturing in New York – including more than $1.5 billion in CHIPS financing for GlobalFoundries, announced earlier this year, which will create more than 1,500 jobs;

• $18.8 billion in transportation investments were allocated to build and improve roads, bridges, public transit, rail, electric vehicle charging stations and airports in New York;

• $2.8 billion was allocated to provide New York communities with affordable, reliable high-speed internet;

• $1.7 billion was allocated to ensure clean water and improve water infrastructure throughout New York State, including more than $358 million to replace lead pipes; and

• Under the Biden-Harris administration, 1 million new jobs were created in New York.

This progress is undeniable. And even the Republicans who voted against CHIPS and Science agree. Republicans across the country who voted against creating jobs, against strengthening national security, and against ensuring competitiveness with China are now showing up for chip manufacturing groundbreakings, innovation center openings, and photo ops with voters who now have good-paying jobs within their grasp.

Republicans who voted against the progress are now championing the investments made through the CHIPS and Science Act and asking voters to count on their support for New Yorkers over the next two years.

Don’t let this hypocrisy fool you. If it were up to Republicans in Congress, CHIPS and Science would never have made it to the President’s desk. We wouldn’t be celebrating the millions coming to our district for schools, roads, bridges, broadband, and the like. We wouldn’t be cheering about the thousands of new jobs that will be created by the new semiconductor manufacturers in our region.

Let us not forget: the voters made this progress possible.

They have placed their faith in the Democratic Party’s promises of job creation, and that is why New York has received $82 billion in funding from the CHIPS and Science Act that will lead to unprecedented job growth while spurring innovation.

Democrats remain committed to putting people above politics, and we will continue to do everything in our power to improve the lives of Americans across the country.

Don’t just take my word for it, look at the jobs as proof. The Democrats’ CHIPS and Science Act is putting New York on the path to a better future, and we’re only getting started.

Paul D. Tonko is the representative of New York’s 20th congressional district, which includes Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga, and Rensselaer.
