Bride sparks debate when she asks wedding guests to put away their cell phones

A bride sparked an online debate when she asked her wedding guests to put away their cell phones.

In a viral Instagram video posted by Australian videographers Khyla Nixon and her husband Andrew, bride Anna Reuss can be heard reprimanding her wedding guests for pulling out their phones to film the ceremony.

The videographer wrote in the text that appeared: “The bride should NOT have to say this during her big moment.”

As she walked down the aisle, the bride could be heard laughing and asking people to put their phones away as a nice way to encourage them to stay present for her big day. “Put your phones away,” she said nicely. “Come on!”

The videographer captioned the clip: “How about taking out your phone during your ceremony?”

In the comments section, people sided with the bride, with some noting that it looked like the bride was hiding her disappointment from some of her guests.

“She’s smiling but I know she’s really upset. Honestly I would feel so disrespected,” one user wrote.

“My wedding was yesterday and our minister announced to put away cell phones,” added another. “I did NOT spend thousands of dollars to see cell phones!”

Some people advocated taking out their cell phones during a wedding.

“I want memories GET THE PHONE OUT because I’m going to record,” one person commented. Another added: “I get it sucks but if that’s what you’re focusing on during one of the biggest moments of your life… I dunno man.”

In a pinned comment, the account explained that guests had been asked to put their phones away for the duration of the ceremony on March 23 in Queensland, Australia. Khyla explained Today The bride had a “chill mentality” and aimed for a “relaxed atmosphere” throughout her wedding, which meant guests had to turn off their devices.

“They just wanted a really relaxed, fun day,” she said. “Nothing too over the top and stressful.”

Of the 100 people in attendance, only 10 were reprimanded for using cell phones. “There were quite a few in the front rows,” Nixon added. “So the immediate family.”

“The celebrant actually asked all guests to put their phones away at the couple’s request,” Nixon continued, adding that the priest told guests something like, “You have paid professionals. They want you to enjoy the moment.”

Nixon noted that it was the first wedding ceremony she had filmed where the cell phone ban was so blatantly flouted, adding that the moment was nothing more than a blip on an otherwise beautiful wedding day and was not mentioned again.

She had decided to release the footage after coming across it while editing other clips and thought it might encourage people to be more present at wedding ceremonies.

She has noticed that more and more guests are recording their wedding ceremonies on their devices and she expects there to be no end in sight.

“We saw that people were just living behind their phones in these moments,” Nixon noted.
