US women’s soccer team aims for fifth Olympic gold in duel against Brazil

PARIS (AP) — The United States will play Brazil on Saturday in the gold medal game in the women’s soccer tournament at the Paris Olympics.

The Americans are seeking their fifth Olympic gold medal, despite not winning gold since London 2012.

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the USA were eliminated in the quarterfinals and had to settle for bronze three years ago in Tokyo.

The two teams have faced each other twice for the gold medal at the Olympic Games. The USA won both times – 2-1 in Athens in 2004 and 1-0 in Beijing in 2008.

Brazilian football legend Marta can end her international career with a gold medal, having declared that her sixth Olympic Games will be her last major tournament with the national team.

This is likely to be the last game of the 38-year-old striker’s international career in her sixth Olympic Games. She has won two silver medals, at the 2004 Games in Athens and four years later in Beijing.

FIFA imposed a two-match ban on Marta for the red card she received in the group stage (0-2) against Spain after a foul on Olga Carmona.

The captain of the Brazilian national team sat out Brazil’s 1-0 quarter-final win against hosts France and the 4-2 win against Spain in the semi-final.
