Detroit Tigers tied for AL wildcard spot with nine games remaining

The Detroit Tigers and the Minnesota Twins are in a neck-and-neck race for the last wildcard spot in the American League with nine games remaining.

The Minnesota Twins lost to the Cleveland Guardians in overtime for the second straight game on Thursday, erasing the Twins’ lead over the Tigers, who had a bye on Thursday. Both teams are at 80-73, two games behind the Kansas City Royals (82-71) and five games behind the wild-card-leading Baltimore Orioles (85-68).

The Guardians won Thursday on a walk-off single by Andrés Giménez in the 10th inning that brought home free runner Jose Ramirez and gave Cleveland its third win in four games against the Twins.

The victory over the Twins officially secured a playoff spot for the Guardians, but Tigers fans were probably even happier. The Tigers have been on the Twins’ heels for weeks and moved up to last place in the standings with a win over the Kansas City Royals on Monday/Wednesday.

For the Tigers, however, the work is not done yet. Although the Tigers and Twins have the same record, the Twins have the tiebreaker over the Tigers with a 7-6 season series win. That means the Tigers would have to finish at least one game ahead of the Twins to secure a playoff spot.

The Tigers are back in action Friday night, playing the Baltimore Orioles in what is the toughest series remaining on their schedule. After that, the Tigers play two easier opponents at home: the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday/Thursday and the historically bad Chicago White Sox on September 27/29. The Twins, meanwhile, visit the Boston Red Sox this weekend and then play at home against the Miami Marlins (Tuesday/Thursday) and the Orioles (September 27/29).
