Epic launches unified Fab marketplace in mid-October

Epic has announced that its new unified Fab marketplace, which brings together its various game asset stores, will launch next month.

Announced at GDC 2023, Fab will bring together Unreal Engine Marketplace, Sketchfab, ArtStation Marketplace and Quixel in one place.

As with the Epic Games Store, developers receive 88% of the revenue from all sales, with an introductory offer of 100% revenue share running until the end of 2024.

Ahead of the mid-October launch, Epic is now inviting established Unreal Engine asset creators to use the Fab Publishing Portal to migrate their products to the new marketplace. New creators and publishers will then be invited to sign up in early October.

Fab will completely replace the Unreal Engine Marketplace, with any non-migrated assets automatically migrated under an Unreal Engine Marketplace license.

It will also replace the Sketchfab Store “in the coming months,” but the site itself will remain open for those who use it to upload and share 3D models privately or publicly.

ArtStation’s marketplace will migrate to Fab in 2025. While sales of assets and products will move to the new store, all other elements of the site – such as portfolios and prints – will remain on ArtStation.

Quixel, which manages high-quality 3D assets, will also move its content to Fab, but most of the site’s megascans will no longer be free and unlimited to use in Unreal Engine projects after the end of 2024. Epic has said it will “eventually stop hosting” Quixel.

Epic has also explained how transparent it will be about the use of AI on its marketplace. Sellers will have to clearly state whether their assets were created using generative AI.

You can also use a “NoAI” tag to make it clear that the asset cannot be used to train GenAI programs. Epic has assured that it “will not use developers’ content to train generative AI programs, nor will it enter into agreements with others to use that content.”
