Kareem Hunt is reportedly returning to where his NFL career began.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday that the Kansas City Chiefs signed the veteran running back to their practice squad after he worked out for the team after Isiah Pacheco suffered a broken fibula during Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Kansas City will likely be without Pacheco for the foreseeable future, as ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Monday that the starter is expected to be out for six to eight weeks.

The Chiefs will also be without wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, who may miss the entire season with a shoulder injury that will require surgery. Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy can still form one of the best offenses in the league, but given the injuries, the two-time defending champions need more depth at the skill positions.

Kansas City selected the 29-year-old in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, he was a Pro Bowler with league-highs of 1,327 rushing yards, 455 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. He played just one more season with the Chiefs and then spent the next five years with the Cleveland Browns.

While Hunt was never able to match those rookie numbers, he’s still someone who can make good plays out of the backfield as a runner or versatile receiver. And opposing defenses will likely focus on other playmakers, which could open up space for him as a third-down receiver.

The Chiefs also have Carson Steele and Samaje Perine at running backs and will certainly rely on both of them during Pacheco’s absence. Perine is also a capable receiver and will likely get plenty of opportunities on third down.

But Hunt offers a familiar face and experienced depth as the organization seeks another Lombard Trophy.
