Caitlin Clark’s record-breaking performance sets new WNBA rookie benchmark

Indiana Fever defender Caitlin Clark has shown no signs of slowing down her record-setting streak since beginning her professional career in the WNBA.

The rookie and former University of Iowa player set a new record on Sunday in a game against the Dallas Wings at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis when she increased her season point total to 761 points, surpassing Hall of Famer Seimone Augustus, who set the previous record of 744 points in 2006, The Guardian reported.

Clark played a key role in the Fever’s 110-109 win over the Wings, her 39th game with the professional team, scoring a career-high 35 points (including eight assists).

“When I went to my first WNBA game (as a kid), Seimone was the first player I ever met on the sidelines watching them warm up,” Clark said, according to The Washington Post. “It definitely brings me full circle. I took my picture (with Augustus) on my dad’s little BlackBerry phone – I remember it vividly. I was always a fan of her game and the way she could shoot the ball and score.”

On Friday, Clark set another WBNA season record for assists in a loss to the Las Vegas Aces, raising his total to 321. “It definitely speaks to the whole year and how historic it was,” Clark said Friday, according to WaPo. “Records continue to be broken — and really good basketball, too. That’s why it’s been so much fun to watch, and the fans have come out and the crowds have been overwhelming this year. Everyone is raising their game and the competition is getting better and better.”
