Heavy flames erupt from pipeline in Deer Park, road closures and large evacuations underway

DEER PARK, Texas – Firefighters in Deer Park are working to extinguish heavy flames at a pipeline, and emergency officials are advising people in the area to evacuate.

Details are few, so it’s unclear what caused the fire, but the La Porte Office of Emergency Management said it broke out on Spencer Highway just before 10 a.m. No injuries have been reported as of this writing.

Due to the fire, Spencer Highway is closed in both directions and the areas surrounding Walmart and HEB are currently closed to traffic. Residents are asked to avoid the area.

Comprehensive evacuations were also ordered for Spencer Highway and Fairmont Parkway between Luella and Canada Road in the Brookglen district.

A curfew has also been imposed at San Jacinto College. Harris County hazardous materials crews and other resources from the Harris County Fire Marshals Office are assisting with firefighting.

La Porte ISD also states that all students at area schools are safe and are sheltering in place.

CenterPoint Energy also reports that just over 700 customers in the area are without power.
