Laraine Newman knows comedy – and she has very special feelings about “The Bear” competing as such at the Emmys.

“Every time I think about The Bear being selected for comedy at the Emmys, I get an ulcer,” the original cast member of “Saturday Night Live” wrote on X on Sunday, the day of the awards ceremony.

At the Emmys, the hit FX series received a whopping 23 nominations, but the Max showbiz series “Hacks” – starring Newman’s daughter Hannah Einbinder – ultimately triumphed over “The Bear” and won the most important comedy award of the evening.

In the category “Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series,” Eindbinder lost to Liza Colón-Zayas from “The Bear.”

Newman isn’t the only one who has wondered why “The Bear” is competing in the comedy category at the prestigious awards show. Social media users have also wondered, and Eugene Levy, who co-hosted this year’s awards show with his father Joseph, even made a witty comment about it during the broadcast.

“‘The Bear’ is nominated for 23 Emmys tonight, making it the most nominated comedy of all time,” Eugene said. “I love the show, I love the show, and I know some of you are expecting us to make a joke about whether ‘The Bear’ is really a comedy. But in the true spirit of ‘The Bear,’ we’re not going to make any jokes.”

So why is The Bear considered a comedy? USA TODAY TV critic Kelly Lawler previously explained:

Why is The Bear considered a comedy at the Emmys?

The series, about a family-run Italian sandwich shop in Chicago that is transformed into an upscale restaurant by chef Carmy Berzatto, played by Emmy Award winner Jeremy Allen White, isn’t often laugh-out-loud funny. The heavily dramatic plot revolves around the suicide of the protagonist’s brother, and inherited family trauma is a major plot point. There is also frequent profanity and derogatory swearing.

“The Bear” is far from the only dramatic television series that competed as a comedy for a better spot at the Emmys. There have been many cases of what award-giving bodies like to call “category fraud.”

It’s the age-old story of the Hollywood awards race. Whether actors are competing in supporting categories instead of leading roles, dramas are competing as comedies, or returning series are sneaking into the miniseries category, there’s always a bit of campaign trickery involved.

When the first season of The Bear aired, before all the hype and nominations, White had his own thoughts about whether the show could be called a comedy.

“I guess if you had to, I’d describe it as a dramedy,” he told USA TODAY in 2022. “It’s definitely funny at times. I don’t think Carmy is necessarily funny, but I think the situations he’s in can be. I think it’s interesting and funny to watch this young man who is not a good communicator trying to communicate what he wants and what he feels to a group of people who are not very good at listening to him either. So I think there’s a certain amount of comedy that comes out of it. I don’t know if it’s so funny that you have to slap yourself on the thigh. I think sometimes it can be. It’s real, or we try to make it real, like real life. Sad things can be funny. Funny things can make you sad.”

Starring: Kelly Lawler, Erin Jensen and Patrick Ryan
