Brittney Griner had 26 points with 10 rebounds and Diana Taurasi scored 25 points with six assists as the Phoenix Mercury ended a three-game losing streak with a 93-88 victory over the Chicago Sky on Sunday.

The two WNBA legends scored 11 of Phoenix’s 16 points in the fourth quarter. With the Mercury (18-20) leading 87-86, Taurasi scored an elbow basket with 2:10 left in regulation, then Griner followed with a basket that gave Phoenix the final lead in a close game throughout.

Natasha Cloud had 18 points with 11 assists and Sophie Cunningham scored 13 for the playoff-qualified Mercury, who shot 54.5 percent and won for only the second time in eight games.

Chennedy Carter had 20 points, Michaela Onyenwere scored 18 points with nine rebounds and Rachel Banham added 17 points and seven assists for the Sky (13-25), who made 14 of 25 three-point shots but scored 31 points total in the second half.

Chicago, which has lost three games in a row and ten of twelve games, is tied with Atlanta and Washington, which currently holds the tiebreaker, in the battle for the last playoff spot.

Both teams performed excellently from the field in the first half, especially beyond the three-point line. Chicago matched a season high by making 10 of its 14 three-pointers in the first half, with Banham hitting 5 of 6 from distance in the first two quarters to score 15 points.

Phoenix, meanwhile, hit 8 of 16 three-pointers, with Taurasi (13 first-half points) and Cunningham (11) each hitting three. Griner scored 15 first-half points for the Mercury, who shot 58.3 in the first 20 minutes but trailed 57-55 at halftime.

Taurasi scored six points and Griner scored four during a 10-0 run midway through the third quarter that gave Phoenix a 69-64 lead. However, the Sky used 3-point shooting to cut into that deficit as Dana Evans and Carter each scored from long range to take a 77-76 lead into the fourth quarter.

Chicago rookie Kamilla Cardoso played just nine minutes in the first half due to a shoulder injury, scoring just two points and three rebounds.

The Mercury’s top scorer and former Sky star Kahleah Copper (21.6 points per game) missed her second consecutive game due to back problems.
