Jamie Lee Curtis wins first Emmy for “The Bear” and jokes about yogurt commercials

Jamie Lee Curtis just won her very first Emmy – and all she can think about is yogurt.

On Sunday, September 8, the 65-year-old actress accepted a statuette at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Donna Berzatto in Season 2 of The bear. She beat fellow nominee Olivia Colman (The bear), Kaitlin Olson (Hacks)Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Only murders in the building)Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live) and Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live).

When it came time to talk about her most important milestone in the Emmys press room, Curtis couldn’t help but think back to her years starring in Activia commercials.

“I’m the luckiest girl in the world,” she said of her win. “I’ve been an actress since I was 19. I’m 65. I sold yoghurt that makes you vomit for seven years and I never thought I would be able to work at this level, with this depth, complexity and intelligence.”

She added: “Having these opportunities has been the most exciting thing about my creative life over the last few years, so I’m humbled and incredibly grateful.”

Curtis made his first appearance The bear in Season 2 as Donna Berzatto, the alcoholic mother of Carmy (Jeremy Allen White), Sugar (Abby Elliott) and Mikey (Jon Bernthal) who proves to be a fundamental wound for each of her children. She was one of many revered guest stars who appeared in “Fishes,” the flashback episode that recounts a chaotic Christmas dinner five years before the events of the show.

The win means Curtis is halfway to EGOT status after winning her first Oscar in 2023 for her performance in Everything everywhere at onceWhen asked about her plan to complete the set with a Grammy and a Tony, Curtis joked that she wasn’t sure she would ever accomplish that.

“Well, I can’t sing at all,” she began. “Actually, I’ve never been on stage. I’ve never been in a play. I don’t stay up late… I’m just not sure I’d do so well in the theater, since you go to bed so late.”

Holding up her Emmy, she added, “But you know what? I never thought something like this would be possible in my lifetime.”

Curtis also took a moment to remember the late Geena Rowlands, the film, stage and television star who died on August 14 at the age of 94.

She said: “Donna really only exists because of Geena Rowlands and the countless women before me who have paved this path of truth and honesty and courage and perseverance and faith, and I am just honored to be one of all of them.”

The bearCo-casting directors Jeanie Bacharach and Maggie Bacharach previously said Weekly entertainment that casting Donna was the most “nerve-wracking” role because they knew it would be a complex role for any actress to pull off the way the writers intended.

“It was really important to understand that destructiveness, that mental health issue, that addiction issue, that brokenness,” Jeanie explained. “She can’t help but sabotage everything. But also the pain that lies underneath. There was a lot to think about.”

She continued: “There are all these wonderful, wonderful actresses, but we just had to get it right because she is the centerpiece. We talked a lot about this wish list of dream actors and examined each person in depth: Do they have all the qualities? Can they be both ugly and heartbreaking? Do they have the right amount of comedy and dignity?”

Throughout the process, Curtis’ name stood out from all the others. Maggie said, “At one point Jeannie asked, ‘What about Jamie Lee Curtis?’ It was so obvious.”
