Michigan football injury update: Jack Tuttle’s status

Sherrone Moore on the loss to Texas, what needs to change, the quarterback situation Michigan Football

Quarterback Graduate Jack Tuttle not attracted to MichiganSeason opener against State of Fresnobut he wore a helmet and shoulder pads and participated in warm-up exercises before the second week’s game Texas.

Tuttle was listed as questionable on the official availability report, but because he was physically limited for most of fall practice due to an unspecified injury and had already been out a week earlier, it did not look like he would get playing time if Michigan had to use a backup for the game against the Longhorns.

However, there is still a chance that he will get some playing time at some point in the future. Head coach Sherron Moore said Monday that Tuttle “has thrown more this week.”

“It looks like he’s ready to go,” Moore said, without going into details.

Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Michigan Kirk Campbell Monday night’s radio show “Inside Michigan Football” shed some more light on the situation.

“Jack has been involved in the room since day one,” Campbell said. “He’s in every quarterback meeting. He always comes here and meets with me. He’s come a long way.”

“We hope he’s ready to play and potentially play in games if he ever earns that position by this week at USC.”

Before Michigan’s fall training camp began and Tuttle was unable to fully participate, Moore said the seventh-grader had a strong offseason.

“He was great, man,” Moore said. “He was accurate, he threw hard, physical, fast and he looks good. … He’s excited, to say the least. We’re going to watch him compete and we’re ready to see what happens.”

Kirk Campbell on the separation of Davis Warren and Alex Orji and Jadyn Davis’ development

Michigan has Senior Davis Warren as starter, but with Junior Alex Orji mixed, mainly for running plays in short yardage situations. He had 3 snaps against Texas, including two on third downs that he did not catch with his legs and a handoff to the running back Kalel Mullings for a 3-yard gain. Campbell discussed the decision-making process of when to bring Orji into the game.

“Alex, in his history from last year, is just really good when he has the ball in his hands,” Campbell said. “We tried to create a spark on the first play. He made a good read; we got the ball on the perimeter and the safety did a damn good tackle on Kalel Mullings. We had a hat for a hat. We thought we made a good play there.”

“And then the second on third down, we were in a situation where we thought we were in a two-down situation. We sent Alex out there. The D-end makes a nice play. If we get the ball on the perimeter, it’s a first down; if Alex pulls it, it’s a first down.

“We’re just using him in situations where he’s been successful in the past. Of course, the end result on Saturday wasn’t great. We’ll have to reevaluate that. But we’re using him in those situations and then trying to expand his role as much as possible (as long as) it doesn’t disrupt the flow of the game.”

Freshmen from Michigan Jadyn Davisnow leads the scout team, according to radio host and former UM All-American Jon JansenThe former four-star recruit has yet to play in a game, but Campbell left open the possibility of using him.

“He’s a great leader,” Campbell said of Davis. “He has a quiet confidence that infects those around him. For a freshman, he learned the offense very quickly.”

“He just needs to continue to work on his quicker feet in the pocket and his development in the pocket. But we’re going to push him to continue to develop and hopefully we can get him some reps in practice to continue to develop him as the season goes on because it’s a long season and you never know what’s going to happen.”
