DirecTV and Disney fail to reach agreement

DirecTV and the Walt Disney Company have entered into an agreement in principle Return of the Disney channels to DirecTV customers.

According to a joint press release from the two companies on Saturday, the parties are still working on a new, multi-year contract. The broadcasters, including ESPN, Disney, ABC stations and streaming services including Hulu were immediately restored.

The canals have been dark for millions of years DirecTV customers since September 1. DirecTV has 11.3 million customers, CBS News previously reported.

The dispute centered on the carriage fees DirecTV pays Disney. DirecTV accused Disney of taking “an anti-consumer approach” by requiring bundled services in a new contract. DirecTV said it wanted to allow its customers to choose from smaller network packages when they sign up to reduce their costs.

As part of the core agreement agreed to by both parties, Disney’s streaming services Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ will be included in select DirecTV packages. DirecTV will continue to carry Disney’s entertainment, sports and news programming.

“Through this unique collaboration, DIRECTV and Disney are giving customers the ability to customize their video experience with more flexible options,” the companies said in a joint statement. “DIRECTV and Disney have long connected consumers with the best entertainment, and this agreement underscores that commitment by recognizing both the tremendous value of Disney content and the evolving preferences of DIRECTV customers. We want to thank all affected viewers for their patience and look forward to restoring Disney’s entire network portfolio in time for college football and the Emmy Awards this weekend.”
