Truck accident in Metairie leads to tougher penalties, disciplinary action against deputy sheriffs and calls for more safety at intersections

METAIRIE, Louisiana (WVUE) – New developments in the investigation into a truck crash that collided with two homes in Metairie in June and seriously injured a woman.

The case involves aggravated charges, disciplinary action against the deputy sheriff and possible safety improvements at the intersection of the I-10 Service Road near Carrollton Avenue and Hollygrove.

Over the years, this intersection has been the site of numerous accidents. Drivers fail to turn and hit signs, sometimes causing them to crash into houses. In June, officials said, Christopher Timpone was traveling at a high rate of speed, crashing through several fences and eventually coming to a stop after hitting a support pillar at a house.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said Timpone will face aggravated charges. A sheriff’s office spokesman said a warrant was issued for Timpone’s arrest on July 1.

On July 12, Timpone was transported from Orleans to Jefferson Parish, where he now faces charges of reckless driving and negligent assault.

After the June crash, homeowners and neighbors questioned why officers did not conduct an on-site breathalyzer test. Initially, officers said the driver showed no signs of impairment.

JPSO said the deputy officer leading the investigation was suspended without pay following a “normal incident review” for failing to conduct a field sobriety test given the circumstances of the accident.

Now neighbors are hoping the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and Jefferson Parish can agree on safety improvements. Councilman Hans Liljeberg is working with JP engineers and the DOTD to install a railing.

“I think we have reached the point where the municipality has to intervene,” said councillor Liljeberg.

Metairie resident Mark Menard said, “We’ve always made the morbid claim that they can only do something like this if someone gets hurt.”

Menard said that in the nearly two decades he has lived off the access road, nearly as many accidents have ended up on his property. He hopes that when a railing is installed, the quality of life will improve for him and his neighbors.

Liljeberg said if approved, the guardrail and redesign of the homeowner’s driveway would cost about $60,000.

“This is special because it’s right in the middle of the state’s road network and within its jurisdiction, and we’re going there and doing it ourselves,” Liljeberg said.

The DOTD previously installed signage and surveyed the intersection, but was unable to agree on installing a railing. Now the DOTD is evaluating whether the municipality can proceed.

“We are currently going through the standard formal review process that we do for every permit and need to determine if this is a viable option that meets all safety and technical standards,” said Scott Boyle of the DOTD.

The U.S. Department of Transportation said the decision on whether to grant or deny approval could take four to six weeks.
