You might think that after a summer of bleach jobs, blue lollipops, and “Miami Baddie Energy,” Camila Cabello would be winding down her career, but the season isn’t over yet—and neither is she. C, XOXO era. The “I Love It” singer has just expanded her Florida-inspired collection to include the newly released Magical City Editionwith four new songs, which she described as “a crucial part of the soul of this album”.

Between a collaboration with Eem Triplin and a flirtatious invitation on “Come Show Me,” the new tracks largely continue the chaotic, carefree, hip-hop-inspired story of the original record, but with even more honesty. However, no tune is as intriguing or insightful as the lowercase “Can Friends Kiss?”, a pounding and seductive bop about pushing boundaries.

If the title doesn’t set the scene perfectly, the first verse does the job perfectly, as Cabello confesses she called an ex-turned-boyfriend and felt the urge to plant fantasies in his head. Though she admits “we shouldn’t,” an undeniable chemistry propels them into a pulsating, dreamy chorus led by a question: “Are friends allowed to kiss? / Touch each other like that?”

And while the 27-year-old paints an irresistible picture of a romantic reunion accompanied by “a Popcaan song,” that vision is shattered in the second verse. What that invitation means in the middle of the night becomes clear when she confronts her ex about his “new girlfriend” who “doesn’t move me.” Cabello even goes so far as to admit, “When you talk about her, I get moody,” a blunt admission that seems to trivialize their breakup and forces her ex to go even further.

Nevertheless, the singer of “June Gloom” plays all her cards on the breathy bridge. “Go lock the door / Fall in love with me, I’m bored,” the lyrics say, before her come-on gives way to an unacknowledged truth: “We both know I’m yours / I can’t take this anymore.”

Yet both Cabello and his unnamed ex seem to understand that just by asking the question, the question answers itself. Friends tilt Kiss – and it’s a feeling the singer comes to terms with by the end of the song. Yet in the outro she can’t resist giving in to the idea for a moment, singing: “Teasin’ on you, put it on you, like this.”

So what happened in the end? Perhaps the answer lies in a note that Cabello posted on Instagram for the Magical City Edition Release: “Now that (these songs) are out, I can finally breathe easy.”
