Zendaya-directed tennis drama gets Prime Video streaming date

challengerLuca Guadagnino’s tennis romance drama, starring Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor, will stream on Prime Video starting September 19, according to the Prime Video site.

The date was posted on Prime Video with the note “Coming to Prime in 8 days” (Prime Video dates sometimes move back a day or two and are subject to change).

challenger follows Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), a former tennis prodigy turned coach and a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court. Tashi is married to a champion on a losing streak (Faist), and her strategy to redeem herself for her husband takes a surprising turn when he faces washed-up Patrick (O’Connor) – his former best friend and Tashi’s ex-boyfriend. The synopsis reads: As their past and present collide and tensions run high, Tashi must ask herself: what will it take to win?

The film premiered in U.S. theaters on April 26, 2024, before moving to PVOD on May 17. It made its SVOD debut on MGM+ on July 29. The film has grossed over $94 million at the worldwide box office.

Guadagnino directed the film from a screenplay by Justin Kuritzkes.

challenger is produced by Amy Pascal, Guadagnino, Zendaya and Rachel O’Connor. Bernard Bellew serves as executive producer of the film. The music is by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. The screenplay was written by Justin Kuritzkes.
