Stand-up comedian Emil Wakim, who grew up in Bloomington and worked and performed at the Comedy Attic, will join the cast of “Saturday Night Live” for its 50th anniversary season, which premieres Sept. 28 and will include festivities, star-studded guests and more.

The announcement came Monday night, when two other up-and-coming performers were announced: Ashely Padilla and Jane Wickline. Chloe Troast, who was a main cast member last season, is leaving SNL.

Before the announcement, Wakim had contacted Jared Thompson, owner of Comedy Attic. Thompson said Wakim last performed at the comedy club in Bloomington in August, something he has done for years.

Thompson said Wakim started working at the club years ago because one of the comedians offered him the opportunity to work at the club so he could learn more about the business.

Wakim is a stand-up comedian and writer currently living in Brooklyn, New York. His first national television debut was on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. He was selected as a “New Face of Comedy” at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal.

In a Facebook post, Thompson said Wakim started doing comedy in Bloomington in 2017, around the same time he started working at the Comedy Attic. He worked at the comedy club until 2020, when he moved to New York.

“In that time, I have never seen anyone who worked harder, who was more resilient, or who was willing to not only do the smart thing but do things right to get where they wanted to go,” Thompson wrote in his Facebook post.

He continued, “Not only was he the funniest person in town and was behind the door for almost every show, but he also did all the graphics for the club, designed our website, did the graphics and checked the poster for the club, and drove most of the comedians to and from the airport.”
