It may not seem like it, with temperatures forecast to reach 80 degrees Fahrenheit for Milwaukee all week, but the first day of fall is less than two weeks away.

It probably won’t feel almost another month like fall. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming autumn equinox and when fall weather and fall colors will arrive in Wisconsin.

When is the first day of fall in Wisconsin?

The first day of fall is September 22, 2024 – but don’t expect cool temperatures and a rainbow of leaves at the end of September.

The National Weather Service is forecasting warmer than normal temperatures for the rest of the month, and fall foliage will not peak in southern Wisconsin and the greater Milwaukee area until late October. Cooler fall weather is also not expected to arrive until mid- to late October.

What is the autumn equinox?

The autumnal equinox marks the first official day of fall. At the end of March, the vernal equinox marks the first day of spring.

The equinoxes are, according to the National Weather Service, the “only two times of the year when the Earth’s axis is neither tilted toward nor away from the sun.” On these days, daylight and darkness are equal in length, and the sun is directly over the equator at noon.

In winter and summer, the solstices in June and December mark the longest and shortest days of the year, respectively. This year, daylight saving time ends on November 3, and Wisconsin experiences its shortest day and longest night on December 21.

When is the fall equinox in Wisconsin?

The exact time of the equinox is September 22 at 8:44 a.m. EDT in the Northern Hemisphere. In Wisconsin, it is 7:44 a.m. CT.

The week before the equinox, a larger-than-normal supermoon will also rise over Wisconsin. The September full moon, or “harvest moon,” gets its name from the official start of the fall harvest season.
