Polaris Dawn launches from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on a mission to Earth’s radiation belts

SpaceX launched the Polaris Dawn mission Tuesday morning from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center press facility, a mission into Earth’s Van Allen radiation belts that will see a four-person civilian crew conduct the first commercial spacewalk.

The crew of a Dragon capsule and a Falcon 9 rocket launched from launch pad 39A at 5:23 a.m. Due to weather conditions, the originally planned launch time was postponed to 3:38 a.m.

The launch was streamed live on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

The Falcon 9’s first stage flew on a northeasterly trajectory and landed at sea aboard a SpaceX drone ship about nine and a half minutes after liftoff. Dragon separated from the Falcon 9’s second stage shortly thereafter.

The crew will spend five days in space before returning to Florida.

This came after several problems prevented the Polaris Dawn crew from attempting to launch in late August.

A problem with ground equipment at the launch site delayed the scheduled launch by 24 hours, and weather conditions forced SpaceX to postpone two more launch attempts.

A Falcon 9 also malfunctioned during a routine satellite mission, prompting U.S. regulators to briefly halt the launch of all Falcon 9 rockets before SpaceX received the green light on August 30.

“Polaris Dawn launch!” SpaceX wrote on X.
