Live updates: Apple event; New “AI” expected for iPhone 16

A person looks at an Apple iPhone 15 Pro during a launch event at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, September 12, 2023.

Here’s a closer look at some of the previously announced iOS 18 updates that we may hear more about later today:

Siri is getting smarter. Apple Intelligence enables Siri to answer questions using information from multiple apps. For example, she can prepare you for an upcoming meeting by telling you the time and location from your calendar, summarize the prep document your colleague emailed, and tell you the weather so you know what to dress for.

Emojis generated by AI. Apple Intelligence allows users to create their own text-prompted emojis in iMessage and generate non-photorealistic images that can be sent in conversations.

OpenAI partnership. In situations where OpenAI’s technology is better suited to answer a user’s questions, Apple offers them the option to search ChatGPT instead. The integration works directly from their Apple device, even if a user doesn’t have a ChatGPT account.

Hidden apps. New privacy updates for iPhone allow users to “lock” certain apps so that they can only be opened with Face ID, Touch ID, or their passcode. Users can also “hide” apps so that they don’t appear on their home screen and media from those apps doesn’t appear anywhere else on their system.

Real-time call logs. iPhone users can now record and transcript calls directly from the Phone app. Everyone on the call will be notified when the call is being recorded.
