Chargers player Josh Palmer and Raiders player Jack Jones sent off after brawl

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Referees ejected Chargers receiver Joshua Palmer and Raiders cornerback Jack Jones from the field in the fourth quarter of the Chargers’ 22-12 victory on Sunday after a brawl between several players.

The fight began after the Raiders prevented a two-point conversion by RB Gus Edwards with 3:40 seconds left in the quarter.

Palmer ran to help WR Ladd McConkey block safety Marcus Epps. Jones ran after Palmer and the two were entangled outside the end zone. Several players tried to break up the fight, which led to separate fights.

Jones was unavailable for comment after the game. Palmer said he “took a lot of punches,” including once from Jones earlier in the game, and was surprised he was sent off for not throwing a punch.

“They came and started throwing punches, but we’re not punching bags,” Palmer said. “So we had to defend ourselves.”

Palmer said there was “no animosity” between him and Jones or the Raiders, but believed the Raiders were frustrated by the Chargers’ receivers’ aggressive blocking maneuvers.

“It’s not personal. There’s no bad blood,” Palmer said. “UFC guys beat each other up for a living and then they go back and shake hands. Especially in football, it’s not like that. But it’s not personal at all. We’re just doing our job the best we can. We’re not trying to hurt anybody.”

Chargers WR Quentin Johnston was one of the first players to try to separate Palmer and Jones, but Raiders OLB Maxx Crosby grabbed Johnston by the collar and pulled him to the ground, leading to another scuffle. Eventually, Chargers coaches, including Jim Harbaugh and linebackers coach NaVorro Bowman, were on the field to help break up the fight. Bowman waved his hands to cheer on the crowd afterward.

“I was just there for my teammates,” Johnston said. “(Crosby) was there for his teammates, and it happened the way it happened.”

Harbaugh described the fight as “hand-to-hand combat.”

“We were just trying to get our guys back, separate them from each other and make sure the other guys kept going,” Harbaugh said. “I was just trying to finish it off.” Harbaugh said the team did not discuss the fight after the game.

Raiders coach Antonio Pierce said the fight was “inexcusable” and “undisciplined.”

“It’s just not worth it,” Pierce said. “They scored a goal, I mean, they kicked our ass. They scored a goal. Let it go.”
