Justin Fields explains how he found out the Steelers were drafting him against the Falcons

In an offseason that saw the Pittsburgh Steelers completely revamp their quarterback room, they were still playing musical chairs two hours before kickoff. Speaking to reporters after the team’s 18-10 win over the Atlanta Falcons, QB Justin Fields explained how he found out he would be the man for tonight’s opener. There wasn’t that there was a big reveal to announce.

“Russ came in after warmups,” Fields told reporters via the team’s YouTube channel. “And he told me it was my turn. Like we’ve said all week, he was questionable, trying to get his calf fixed and get going. So really close to the game.”

Russell Wilson suffered a calf injury during Thursday’s practice, was limited Friday, and was officially listed as questionable on the team’s final injury report. Although reports strongly suggested Fields would be preferred over Wilson, the Steelers still tested Wilson in pregame warmups. His session was slow, lasting about 12 to 15 minutes before he went back into the tunnel. A short time later, reports surfaced that Fields would be the starter. Wilson was in uniform but inactive as the third quarterback behind Kyle Allen.

Justin Fields and the Steelers offense started slow but came into their own in the second half. He officially finished the day completing 17 of 23 passes for 156 yards, with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Although both Fields and the offense were sloppy at times, they ultimately didn’t lose the ball. In Pittsburgh, that’s often enough to win.

Fields picked up key yards with his legs and threw a few deep throws, including a key 33-yard pass to wide receiver George Pickens late in the first half. He finished the game with 57 rushing yards on 14 carries, second on the team in both categories after only rushing running back Najee Harris.

Mike Tomlin declined to comment on who will be starting next week, so Fields will have to be patient, as he was in Week 1, to find out what happens in Week 2. Wilson’s health will play a big role in what the team does against Denver.
