An award-winning Memphis food truck is going out of business.

Owner and operator Jesse McDonald announced on Facebook Friday that New Wing Order is closing. The post said they hope to reopen New Wing Order in some form at some point.

“In the meantime, you can still come by and eat the food I’m cooking soon, so stay tuned. I’m not done yet,” McDonald said on Facebook.

In his post, McDonald said he enjoyed serving the community, but that in recent years, rising costs have made it difficult to maintain a business and that New Wing Order has struggled with unexpected expenses.

The food truck opened in 2018. Then in June 2022, New Wing Order decided to open its first brick-and-mortar location in the Ghost River Brewing Co. taproom at 341 Beale St.

McDonald said in the post that the New Wing Order location had strong sales during its first 15 months of operation, but things began to change and it decided to change course by exiting the business and focusing primarily on the food truck.

“Unfortunately, we are at a crossroads and I have to make another really difficult decision,” McDonald said. “I’m sorry to say we have to close the food truck. I’m so grateful for every single person who has ever tried my food. Having a ton of repeat customers is the best thing in the world and the way Memphis has welcomed us means everything to me. I’m so incredibly proud of what we’ve built.”

What was New Wing Order known for?

New Wing Order was lauded for its award-winning chicken wings. Guests could choose between jumbo party wings or boneless wings prepared with a selection of sauces and seasonings of the customer’s choice. New Wing Order also served unique dishes such as hot wing nachos and vegan-friendly avocado tacos.

RESTAURANT OPTIONS IN MEMPHIS: Blind Bear is closing in Downtown Memphis. Here’s what we know about the bar’s closure.

How did New Wing Order begin?

New Wing Order was founded in 2013 as a competition cooking team by a group of hot wing enthusiasts who wanted to create the perfect flavor for every appetite—from mild to scorching hot, with sauce or dry marinade, from local to international favorites, and everything in between. Countless hours in the test kitchen led to trophies on the competition circuit, including multiple Hot Wing Grand Championships and a number of other awards. Eventually, the decision was made to open a food truck, and New Wing Order hit the road in the fall of 2018.
