Utah’s QB Cameron Rising leaves the game against Baylor with a right hand injury

Utah QB Cameron Rising was taken to the locker room with an apparent injury to his right hand 1:47 before halftime in the Utes’ No. 11 game against Baylor.

Rising was injured when he was pushed into the drinks box on the Baylor sideline. Rising had run to the left and lost control of the ball just before it went out of bounds. As he was forced out of bounds by Baylor defenders, Rising fell headfirst into a table full of drinks and coolers below.

Rising appeared to have hit his right hand on a cooler on the turf. He stood up and held onto his right hand before heading to the locker room.

At halftime, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham told Fox that Rising’s return was questionable. Rising returned to the sideline but did not return to the game. When he emerged from the locker room in the second half, Rising was wearing civilian clothes and had two fingers wrapped in bandages.

Rising was replaced by rookie Isaac Wilson after his injury.

The seventh-year senior returned in 2024 after missing the entire 2023 season with a knee injury he suffered in the 2022 season-ending Rose Bowl. Since transferring to Utah before the 2020 season, Rising has been one of the best quarterbacks in college football when he’s on the field, throwing 46 touchdowns and just 13 interceptions during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. But he’s also missed a lot of time due to injuries. In addition to missing all of last season, Rising suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the first game of the 2020 season.

Utah’s offense suffered in his absence last season, as the Utes scored just 23 points per game. On Saturday, when Rising left the game, Utah led 23-0 and Rising completed 8 of 14 passes and scored two touchdowns.
