Penn State beats Bowling Green in thrilling home opener: Live update recap

FOURTH QUARTER

Penn State 34, Bowling Green 27

0:00 – Kobe King recovered Bowling Green’s onside kick, and with no timeout for the Falcons, Allar kneeled to stop the contest. Penn State escaped the danger.

0:47 – Bowling Green stormed down the field with relative ease but got stuck in scoring range. Bazelak had a deep drive on third down from the 25-yard line, but Elliot Washington had strong coverage. Jackson Kleather made the 42-yard field goal to cut the score.

Penn State 34, Bowling Green 24

4:09 am – Goodbye, Nicholas Singleton. One play after the interception, Singleton ran 41 yards to the goal to give Penn State a lead, his second 40-plus yard touchdown in as many games. Gabriel Nwosu’s kickoff went out of bounds, giving Bowling Green the ball at the 40-yard line.

Penn State 27, Bowling Green 24

4:16 – Bazelak is under pressure on the third attempt and a missed throw lands in Zakee Wheatley’s lap. Second drive in a row that ends in an interception for Penn State, at the Bowling Green 41.

5:09 am – Penn State was three-and-out after the interception. James Franklin will be upset about that. Punt down to the BGSU 15.

6:36 – Tony Rojas with an incredible interception. Was in 1-on-1 coverage and ripped the ball away from a defender, giving Penn State the ball near the halfway line.

10:03 am – However, Penn State’s offense is back down to earth. The Lions are three and out, hampered by a holding call on a Tyler Warren screen pass, while BGSU’s CJ Brown made a great save on a deep ball intended for Wallace. Thompson’s punt went to the Falcon 19.

12:01 pm – The Nittany Lions defense gave it their all in the second half, allowing only one first down up to that point. Great third-down blitz by CB AJ Harris that forced Bazelak to throw the ball away. Penn State took over from their own 40.

THIRD QUARTER

Penn State 27, Bowling Green 24

0:00 – Penn State fought its way down the field to the 12-yard line, but a touchdown was disallowed due to offensive pass interference by Omari Evans, who beat a defender wide and extended his arm in the end zone to catch the ball.

Drew Allar then threw a bad interception in the end zone while targeting Harrison Wallace III. It looked like he was going there the whole time.

BGSU took it out of the fourth quarter, a rash decision. The Falcons took it at their own 3.

5:14 – Penn State forced another three-and-out with good pressure and an intercepted pass from Elliot Washington. The Lions got the ball back on their 37 after a fair catch by Saunders.

6:13 – Penn State marched down the field this time. Allar hit Tyler Warren three times for 62 yards. Julian Fleming made his first Penn State catch, a 3-yard bubble screen. Allar then hit Singleton on a nice angle route behind the BGSU linebackers for six.

Bowling Green 24, PSU 20

10:20 am – Penn State finally gets off the field with a three-and-out. Bowling Green’s first punt of the day. Zakee Wheatley made a nice play on the third attempt to intercept the pass, although a slow-developing blitz didn’t help him much. Kaden Saunders, now healthy and able to return punts, managed a few yards before dropping the ball. He was very lucky that the ball bounced out of bounds.

11:47 am – Penn State came out with Beau Pribula at quarterback for two consecutive snaps, both of which resulted in long gains: a keeper and a handoff to Kaytron Allen. A short run, a first-down pass that was ruled incomplete after review, and a long sack that left Allar fighting for his life led to a punt.

HALFTIME: Bowling Green 24, PSU 20

SECOND QUARTER

Bowling Green 24, Penn State 20

0:10 – Sahaydak hits a 28-yard field goal after Penn State’s drive stalls. Allar had a 30-yard pass to Warren, Singleton and Allar both had big runs, but Bowling Green made it home on a third-down blitz in the red zone.

Bazelak went down on his knees at the end of the half.

Bowling Green 24, Penn State 17

3:32 – The Falcons are making things difficult for Penn State. Jamal Johnson ran 41 yards up the middle and scored the rushing touchdown. BGSU has already reached 288 yards on offense.

Penn State 17, Bowling Green 17

5:28- After a good start, Penn State faltered. Sander Sahaydak made a 43-yard field goal, a good comeback after missing from 48 yards against WVU. Safety KJ Winston is on the sideline without a helmet, a cause for concern for Penn State.

Bowling Green 17, Penn State 14

8:29 am – Bowling Green moved the ball a little, but Penn State pressed on near the halfway line. It looked like the Falcons were going to try a fourth down from their own 45-yard line, but they let the game clock run out and called a timeout. They went out to try anyway, and an unblocked Abdul Carter deflected Bazelak’s pass. Penn State took the lead in plus territory.

11:48 am – If you blinked, you missed it. Penn State drove 75 yards to answer BGSU’s score in a minute. Allar hit Warren at the seam for 22 yards, Singleton carried defenders for 24 yards, and Allar hit Evans for redemption on a 29-yard score over the defense. Sahaydak’s PAT was right.

Bowling Green 17, Penn State 7

12:48 pm – Buckle up, folks. Connor Bazelak threw a beautiful pass into the back corner of the end zone, right into the face of a free-running Dom DeLuca, and found Malcolm Johnson Jr., who fired the ball home to make it 1-0.

FIRST QUARTER

Bowling Green 10, Penn State 7

0:00 – Bowling Green is back on the rise. The Falcons have pushed into PSU territory, including a third and fourth conversion with a second big aerial attempt. Penn State’s tackling was weak from the start and the defense appears to be asleep.

3:31 – Penn State with the first punt of the game after a three and out. Allar missed a free Julian Fleming on second attempt (Fleming’s first target for PSU). The QB then threw a dart to Tre Wallace on third and long, but it was called back for holding. On third and 17, Allar extended the play and advanced into the pocket, finding a free Omari Evans behind the chains, but Evans dropped the ball.

BGSU takes over after a 56-yard punt by Riley Thompson at their own 32.

4:50 – Jackson Kleather knocked down a 33-yard field goal to put BGSU back in the lead. A major pass interference call against Cam Miller and an offside call against Hakeem Beamon/Abdul Carter helped extend the drive.

Penn State 7, Bowling Green 7

10:14 am – Penn State responded terribly quickly with a more explosive offense. Drew Allar found Tyler Warren on two passes for 27 yards, while Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen combined for 43 yards. Drew “Lamar Allar” saved a triple option for a 5-yard touchdown.

Bowling Green 7, Penn State 0

12:39 pm – Penn State’s Gabriel Nwosu got Bowling Green started with a touchback from the end zone, but the Falcons came back with a vengeance. A 30-yard pass on their first play got things rolling as QB Connor Bazelak went 4-5 for 71 yards on the first drive. He completed a rub route to Harold Fannin Jr. for 6 yards to LB Dom DeLuca for a score from 6 yards. Also a great completion on third down as Penn State’s defense got a smack in the face.

15:00 – Penn State won the coin toss and moved the game to the second half. Former Lions tight end Jesse James was honorary captain.

Pre-match updates

-Penn State’s availability report is in and it’s not good for the Nittany Lions. Second-year tight end Andrew Rappleyea is listed as opted out after his first start last week. Second-year linebacker Ta’Mere Robinson is also opted out.

Freshman quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer, currently the third-string player, is questionable. He was not on the field during the early part of warmups. Walk-on Jack Lambert would be the next option behind Allar and Beau Pribula.

– Both Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen have been announced as the starting running backs on the video boards at Beaver Stadium, which is certainly a testament to the Penn State staff working hard to keep both guys happy this season.

STATE COLLEGE – Penn State and coach James Franklin entered the partially renovated Beaver Stadium for the first home game Saturday against the Bowling Green Falcons.

Kickoff is set for noon and PennLive will provide you with live updates throughout the afternoon. Refresh this page often for the latest information.

The Nittany Lions are 1-0 after a 34-12 win at West Virginia. Second-year starting quarterback Drew Allar had a dominant performance, scoring three touchdowns under first-year offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki. Running back Nicholas Singleton was in good form, scoring two 40-yard runs and a long touchdown. We’ll see how many young players are used on Saturday against a weaker opponent.

Bowling Green starts 2024 1-0 after a 7-6 record in 2023. The Falcons dominated Fordham 41-17, thanks to 161 rushing yards and three touchdowns from running back Terion Stewart.

Saturday marks the first meeting between Penn State and Bowling Green since 1998 and the third overall. Penn State is 2-0 and all games have been played at Beaver Stadium.
