Nick Saban talks about his life as a rookie at ESPN College GameDay

College Football Week 2 BREAKDOWN with JD PicKell and Ari Wasserman

Nick Saban has been a very successful addition to the College GameDay team, but it was an adjustment for him to become a new part of the team on Saturdays.

Saban spoke about his time so far during two appearances on GameDay in Dublin and College Station during “The Pat McAfee Show” on Friday in Ann Arbor. He said he still feels like a new member, especially because he’s still learning what it means to work in the media. But he’s being as attentive as possible to be a welcome part of the opener each weekend.

“You know, I’m still pretty new. I’m learning how it works,” Saban said. “Not in terms of information you want to give out, but when and how to say it. How to respect the people around you, how to have the conversation. How to get along with everybody, because we’re a team. On any team, you have to be able to fit into your role, and that’s what I’m trying to do with all my might.”

Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso and Desmond Howard had already gained a new seat with McAfee last year. Now Saban is the second in as many years after he resigned as coach in January.

Now, according to Saban, McAfee becomes a support for him during the show. They couldn’t be more different in their demeanor, but his energy gives Saban the time to calm down.

“But you made it easier for me,” Saban said, looking at McAfee. “I mean, sitting next to you makes it easier for me because I’m less nervous. You’re very aggressive, no matter what we talk about or what we do. I didn’t know exactly what word to use for that.”

Given his contribution, this is the first of hopefully many seasons for Saban on College GameDay, and until then, it will only get better as he continues to adjust to life as a retiree, commentating on the action on the field rather than coaching a team there.
