Taylor Swift appeared to distance herself from her Trump-supporting friend Brittany Mahomes at a Kansas City Chiefs game on Thursday night.

For much of last season, the superstar and the girlfriend of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce typically watched alongside Mahomes. However, TMZ reports that Swift spent the Chiefs’ season-opening game in a separate suite. The move came after the wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes appeared to support Donald Trump’s campaign.

Brittany made headlines in August when she “liked” an Instagram message from former President Donald Trump. She later criticized “haters” and accused them of having “deep-rooted (childhood) issues.”

Swift and Kelce have been the subject of numerous right-wing conspiracy theories portraying them as puppets who wanted to support Democratic policies. Both have kept a low political profile in recent months.

The “Miss Americana” singer endorsed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris before the 2020 race, but was questioned and even attacked for her relative silence ahead of the 2024 election. When Trump posted an AI-generated image falsely depicting Swift’s support for him, she refrained from taking legal action despite public backlash.

Swift was also criticized for failing to condemn Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker’s misogynistic and anti-LGBTQ commencement speeches at his graduation ceremony at Saint Benedict University, especially after Kelce defended his comments and character.

Nevertheless, Swift fans gathered thousands at a Zoom meeting under the motto “Swifties for Kamala,” where singer Carole King and Senator Elizabeth Warren also gave speeches.

Trump, for his part, seemed shocked that the pop star would support Democrats. In a November 2023 interview, the former president seemed surprised by the idea that Swift might not play along with liberal views on camera.

“She’s really liberal? This isn’t a show?” he said. “I’m surprised a country star can be successful while being liberal.”
