“60 Minutes” says Trump’s accusation that the Harris interview was misleadingly edited is false

In a rare rebuke, CBS news magazine “60 Minutes” rejected former President Trump’s accusation that the show manipulated an answer in Vice President Kamala Harris’ recent interview to make it look better to viewers.

CBS showed an excerpt from the Democratic presidential candidate’s interview on “Face the Nation” the day before its release on a special edition of “60 Minutes” that aired Oct. 7. The answer to a question about the Biden administration’s handling of the Israel-Gaza war was different than the one aired on the show.

In speeches and appearances on his favorite conservative media outlets, Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, claims that CBS misled the public by editing the broadcast response to paint Harris in a more positive light.

“That is wrong,” was the answer to the same question on Sunday. Same answer, but a different part of the answer.”

The portion used in “60 Minutes” was “more concise, leaving time for other topics in a wide-ranging 21-minute segment.”

Harris’ entire response appears in a transcript on the CBS News website.

The statement published on X noted that Trump had decided not to participate in the same program. CBS News previously said he withdrew because his campaign was told his comments would be fact-checked. Trump also said he wanted an apology from “60 Minutes” for calling Hunter Biden’s laptop Russian propaganda, which was never mentioned on the show.

“60 Minutes” has interviewed both presidential candidates before an election since it first aired in 1968.

Trump still has an open invitation to be on the program before the November 5 election.

Trump’s accusation of fraudulent editing has been repeated by commentators on Fox News and other media outlets sympathetic to the former president.

Trump told right-wing podcast host Dan Bongino that he would sue the station. He has also said that he wants CBS’ television licenses revoked and that the show should be taken off the air.

During an appearance on Fox News’ “Media Buzz” on Sunday, Trump reiterated his stance. Host Howard Kurtz described CBS’ actions as “unethical,” even as he informed Trump that the FCC has said it will never revoke a television station’s license based on a politician’s complaint about its coverage.
