57-year-old man collapses during the Detroit Marathon in Canada and dies shortly afterwards

Detroit- A 57-year-old man competing in the 2024 Detroit Free Press Marathon collapsed and died after receiving medical treatment, race officials announced Sunday morning.

The incident occurred around mile five on the Canadian portion of the course, race director Aaron Velthoven said. The man was taken to Windsor Regional Hospital Ouellette Campus, where he was later pronounced dead, Velthoven said.

“Our condolences – we are sad, our sympathy goes out to them, they really do,” Velthoven said. “It’s a difficult thing. It’s a difficult thing for anyone to hear that call over the radio.”

The man’s identity will be released after his family is notified.

This isn’t the first time a serious medical incident has occurred on the Detroit Free Press Marathon route, nor is it the first death for someone competing in the race, Velthoven said, but he couldn’t pinpoint the specific year remember because it happened years ago.

Velthoven praised the first responders in this scenario.

“I would like to thank the medical staff and volunteers along the course. They are there for these situations, these medical emergencies,” said Velthoven.
