5 dead in plane crash on Catalina Island – Press Telegram

A twin-engine plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Catalina Airport in Avalon on Tuesday evening, Oct. 8, killing all five people on board, authorities said.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s officers at the Avalon Station received a notification from a cellphone shortly after the crash naming possible injuries and giving the phone’s location about a mile west of the airport, sheriff’s officials said.

Officers, along with Los Angeles County firefighters, arrived in rough, steep terrain and found the wreckage, officials said.

All five adults aboard the Beechcraft 95 aircraft were found dead.

Members of Avalon Search and Rescue and the Avalon City Fire Department also assisted in the search, sheriff’s officials said.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate, the FAA said.

Officials have not released the names of those on the plane pending notification of relatives.

Over the years, other serious accidents occurred on Catalina.

In 2008, three Laguna Beach people were killed and a fourth was injured when a single-engine Mooney M20J fell off the end of the runway after failing to take off.

The following year, three people, including a Dana Point pilot, died when a Beechcraft Bonanza crashed into a hill after taking off from the airport. The pilot’s fiancée called authorities after the plane failed to arrive at John Wayne Airport.
