49ers RB Kyle Shanahan confirms injury, team may need new kicker

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed in a conference call Friday that running back Jordan Mason avoided a serious shoulder injury in the 49ers’ win over the Seahawks on Thursday night.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday morning that Mason is suffering from a sprained AC joint in his shoulder. Shanahan said Mason officially suffers from the sprain on a daily basis. He has a chance to play in Week 7 when the 49ers host the Kansas City Chiefs.

That wasn’t the only good news for the 49ers on the injury front. Rookie safety Malik Mustapha, who left Thursday’s game with an ankle injury, is dealing with only a mild ankle sprain. He is suitable for everyday use and could be ready to play after the mini-bye after the game on Thursday evening. Mustapha recorded his first career interception in the first quarter against the Seahawks.

On the other hand, the 49ers may be in the market for another kicker.

Matthew Wright was brought in to replace Jake Moody after Moody suffered a severe ankle sprain in Week 5. On the final kick return of the game on Thursday night, Wright had to step in and make a tackle. He briefly dislocated his shoulder. The team is still awaiting test results before deciding whether he will be available in Week 7.

If Wright is unable to play in Week 7, the 49ers will need to sign another kicker.
