46 people were hospitalized with food poisoning in Maryland after sharing a meal prepared by a co-worker

Officials said 46 people were hospitalized due to an “outbreak of foodborne illness” after eating a dish at their workplace in Maryland.

Howard County Fire & Rescue said it responded to the 7700 block of Chesapeake Bay Court in Jessup at 3:45 p.m. Monday to a report of multiple patients suffering from food poisoning “after allegedly eating the same food.”

The 46, all adults, were examined and taken to various area hospitals. All were non-critical, the department said.

The workers reportedly became ill about an hour after eating a pasta dish, according to NBC News affiliate WBAL in Baltimore.

The Howard County Health Department said it is working with the Maryland Department of Health to investigate the exact cause of the incident.

“Preliminary evidence suggests that the illness is related to outside food prepared by an employee and shared with others in the facility,” the department said.

The department is now speaking to those affected to find out “more details about the food in question”.

“At this time, we are not aware of any additional illnesses associated with this incident and we believe there is a low risk to the general public,” the department said.

All 46 people who were hospitalized have been released.

The Maryland Department of Health reiterated on

The incident occurred at NAFCO Wholesale Seafood Distributors, WBAL reported. Stanley Pearlman Enterprises, NAFCO’s parent company, told the outlet that the food that caused the illness did not come from the facility.

“NAFCO operates to the highest health and safety standards in the industry. “Our headquarters and facilities are regularly inspected and monitored by relevant health authorities to ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations,” the company said.
