    4 dead, 17 hospitalized after truck hits cars stopped for work on I-96

    Four people died and scores were injured in a pileup on Interstate 96 after a semi-trailer struck several vehicles stopped for construction work Saturday evening.

    About 15 vehicles, including the truck, were involved in the crash on Interstate 96 at the M-52 overpass near Webberville, according to a tweet from the Michigan State Police First District.

    Seventeen vehicle occupants were taken to UM Sparrow Hospital and McLaren Hospital in Lansing with serious injuries, police said.

    Police said electrical crews were working on a project to move power lines across I-96 around 11:42 p.m. Saturday, requiring the highway to be closed for a short period of time.

    State police initially said the workers were with Consumers Energy, but later issued a correction saying they were with DTE Energy.

    Colleen Rosso, a spokeswoman for DTE Energy, said the company operates when it is most convenient for customers, citing Saturday night hours.

    “If we’re going to do something like this on the expressway, we’re going to do it when the expressway is at its lowest volume because it needs to be closed for both the safety of travelers and the safety of… That’s why we’re working with the Michigan State Police on it and trying to figure out when it causes the least amount of inconvenience,” Rosso said.

    Troopers had completed the closure of westbound I-96 at the M-52 overpass and reopened the highway, but numerous vehicles were still stopped.

    Police said a semi-trailer was traveling westbound on the highway and the male driver did not notice the traffic jam and was unable to stop in time. The truck was in the left lane and crashed into numerous vehicles.

    Police said I-96 eastbound and westbound were closed while they investigated the crash, and the Michigan Department of Transportation would investigate structural damage to the M-52 overpass.
