3 explosives found, 2 arrested after DUI incident leads to hours-long shutdown of I-90

Two men are in custody after a drunk driving stop led to an explosive investigation that resulted in Interstate 90 being closed for an extended period.

Bellevue officers responded to the 3500 block of 108th Avenue around 10:36 a.m. after receiving reports of a previously stolen black Mercedes sedan idling in a parking lot with both the driver and passenger asleep.

When officers arrived, they discovered that two middle-aged men had drugs with them. The officers then suspected that an incident had occurred under the influence of alcohol. With this suspicion in mind, the officers woke up the driver, who then fled the scene of the accident.

All four of the vehicle’s tires were spiked by police, but the men continued to elude authorities. According to police, the vehicle was traveling at a speed of approximately 5 miles per hour after being spiked.

According to police, the suspect then drove under I-90, turned onto SE 34th Street eastbound, turned left onto 113th Ave SE northbound and then continued south on Bellevue Way before he drove onto I-90 West.

At this time, the Washington State Patrol joined in to assist the Bellevue Police Department.

The occupant of the vehicle actually attempted to escape from the vehicle while driving on the highway, but police quickly arrested him.

After apprehending the passenger, Washington State Patrol used a PIT maneuver while traveling at approximately 3 mph to disable the vehicle west of Exit 8. Police said the driver allegedly fled the vehicle and headed west toward the Mercer Island overpass, leading to a foot pursuit

As officers approached the suspect, he turned to them with a blowtorch and an explosive device in his possession. When the suspect attempted to light the device, Bellevue officers threw him to the ground and took him into custody.

I-90 was immediately closed because of the explosive device. Bomb squads for the Bellevue Police Department, Washington State Patrol and King County, as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were called to the scene.

Two more explosive devices were found inside the vehicle.

The driver was arrested for possession of an explosive device, multiple assaults, driving under the influence, possession of a stolen vehicle and evading law enforcement.

The passenger was arrested on existing arrest warrants.

The suspects were taken to Overlake Medical Center for evaluation. Both will be taken to the King County Jail upon medical release.
