230,000 Johnson County residents receive notices of planned property tax increases

JOHNSON CO., Kansas (KCTV) – Hundreds of thousands of Johnson County residents will soon find notices of planned property tax increases in their mailboxes.

Officials in Johnson County, Kansas, announced Thursday, August 8, that more than 230,000 notices of planned property tax increases will be sent out by Saturday at the latest, as required by law.

The law requires counties to send a notice to taxpayers when the revenue-neutral tax rate exceeds the revenue-neutral tax rate compared to the proposed tax rates for each entity.

County officials pointed out that the revenue-neutral tax rate corresponds to the tax rate that would generate the same property tax revenue as the previous year based on the certified assessed value of the current tax year as of June 1.

The county said the notice included the dates, times and locations for public hearings to be held by any entity seeking to exceed the revenue-neutral tax rate.

In June, officials said a special session of the legislature was called to focus on the property tax relief, which would increase the school levy exemption from $44,702 to $75,000 of assessed value, resulting in a $172.50 credit for qualified properties. The new exemption will be reflected in the general school tax authority for 2024.

As a reminder, the county said the notices are not bills and do not need to be paid. Property taxes will be assessed on Nov. 1, but the actual tax may be higher or lower than these estimates.

The district said property tax returns will be sent out later in November. Tax payments for the first half of the year are due no later than December 20.

New in 2024: County officials said property owners can print their notices by searching for their property HERE using the short reference number or address.
