23 years after the September 11 attacks, there is no justice

Twenty-three years after the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, Daphne Eviatar, Director of Amnesty International USA’s Security with Human Rights Program, made the following statement:

“We commemorate this tragic anniversary with abiding sadness, but also with astonishment and disappointment that 23 years after the horrific attacks of September 11, 2001, the survivors and families of the victims have still not received justice or accountability for this crime against humanity.

“The stark reality is that the military commissions established in the wake of the attacks at the Guántanamo Bay detention camp have been a complete failure. They have circumvented U.S. and international law and violated the rights of those detained there, while the survivors and families of the victims of the September 11 attacks have yet to receive justice. Most of the 30 remaining detainees have not even been charged with a crime, let alone given a fair trial.

“The United States must finally close this painful chapter and hold the victims and survivors of 9/11 truly accountable, while respecting the human rights of those accused and those who remain detained indefinitely without charge. President Biden must release the remaining detainees who have not been charged with any crimes and close the facility once and for all.”
