2 shot and 6 injured in downtown Orlando during Halloween celebrations

Two people are dead and at least six others injured after a shooting in downtown Orlando, Florida, in the early hours of Friday morning as thousands enjoyed the city’s Halloween celebrations, police said.

Police arrested a 17-year-old boy on suspicion of committing the shooting. No motive has yet been determined and the identities of those killed and injured have not been released, although police said the victims were between 19 and 39 years old.

Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith said at a news conference early Friday that shots were fired at Central Boulevard and Orange Avenue just after 1 a.m. and that more shots were fired nearby a few minutes later.

The six injured people were taken to Orlando Medical Center for treatment. Police said everyone was in stable condition.

Police said the suspect was arrested and taken into custody. He was arrested back in 2023 for grand theft, a crime that is still under investigation.

Smith said at the news conference that Orlando was popular on Halloween, one of the city’s busiest nights of the year, with between 50,000 and 100,000 people expected. About 100 police officers patrolled the area and were able to arrest the gunman shortly after the shooting, Smith said.

Police showed surveillance camera images of very crowded downtown streets at the time of the shooting, with people apparently running in panic as shots were fired.

“The officers did a great job. They reacted immediately when they heard the shooting, you know. So everyone else runs away. They don’t, they sit in position and look for a shooter. They found a shooter. They took him downstairs,” he said.

He added that the suspect was determined to carry out the shooting and appeared undeterred by the police presence.

“Whatever his attitude was, he was definitely going to shoot. He walked past several officers… He walked past at least 10 officers, right past them,” Smith said.

Orange-Osceola District Attorney Andrew Bain said at the news conference that it is likely the suspect will be charged as an adult as the investigation continues.
