12 films for an autumn evening date, from “Dead Poets Society” to “Scream”

I love a good summer blockbuster and a moody seasonal drama, but nothing beats a cozy fall movie for a date night. Literally, anything can count—as long as it gives you those warm fall feelings. That means many great fall movies for date night include football themes, romantic comedies set in the fall, and movies with lots of books.

Date night at home is always a win, but when you pick the perfect fall snacks (candy corn paired with popcorn is gourmet, don’t fight it) and pair them with one of these fall date night movies, you’re in for a real treat. Many of these movies are from the late ’80s and early ’90s, which obviously ties into all those cozy factors. They feel like home, they’re pure nostalgia, and you just feel comfortable as soon as they’re on. These are the movies to watch whether you’ve been with your partner for 15 years or you’ve just started dating: good cuddle movies with sweet, warm storylines.

And, yes, a bit of football.

So pick your favorite—each of them is available on at least one popular streaming service—and get to the part of a cozy fall movie night that you enjoy most. (Cuddle.)

You have mail

“Don’t you love New York in the fall? I want to buy school supplies right away.” And look You have mail. This classic romantic comedy is delightfully ’90s and full of cozy nostalgia, but it also has plenty of fall moments. Even though the film goes from fall to spring, there’s just something about the beginning, with Meg Ryan carrying a pumpkin to her little bookstore, that makes you want to drink a PSL and curl up under a blanket with your partner.

You can stream You have mail via Prime Video and Apple TV.

Magical sisters

Normally I wouldn’t approve of margaritas in the fall, but if you want to watch Magical sistersit’s kind of a must-see. Full of romance, spookiness, sisterly love, and total girl power, this delightful film is a must-see for fall. I wouldn’t even call it a Halloween movie (although there are a few scenes), but the moody lighting and the gorgeous house in this beautiful town really sets the fall mood.

You can stream Magical sisters via Prime Video and Apple TV.

Rudy

Whether you are a football fan or not, Rudywill hit you right in the heart. The story of a dreamer from Illinois who wants to play football for Notre Dame, Rudy is full of Midwestern fall cheer, cozy family moments, and plenty of team camaraderie that will make you want to run out and get your own Fighting Irish jersey.

You can stream Rudy via Prime Video and Paramount+.

Dead Poets Society

“O, Captain! My Captain!” If Dead Poets Society doesn’t inspire you to run out into the world and seize the day, then I don’t know how else I can help you. This 1989 film stars Robin Williams in one of his best roles and will break your heart in the best way possible. And all those beautiful shots of campus and fall moments? Swoon.

You can stream Dead Poets Society via Prime Video and Apple TV.

The craft

OK, The craft is scarier than most of the movies on this list, but a good choice for a fall evening date since each jump scare gives you so many opportunities to hold your partner. The craft was a movie that stuck in my brain when I was an impressionable teenager in the 90’s, and even though I already knew bullying was wrong, watching it made me genuinely afraid of ever being mean to anyone. A good reminder for all of us.

You can stream The craft via Max, Prime Video and Apple TV.

silver linings Playbook

Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro – the star cast alone is reason enough to watch the whole thing silver linings Playbook. But since it also takes place during football season (Go Eagles, I guess), it’s also the perfect cozy fall movie, full of sweet, funny, real moments.

You can stream Silver Linings Playbook on Max, Prime Video, and Apple TV.

Scream

Another scary one, Scream is officially a fall date night movie because I feel like that was literally all we did on date night in the ’90s and early 2000s – watch poor teenagers run for their lives while we made out with our partners. Bring back some of that kind of romance by Screaman absolute horror film classic. It’s perfect for fall and Halloween, of course, but also strangely cozy thanks to the 90s vibe.

You can stream Scream via Max, Prime Video and Apple TV.

The Prince’s Bride

Maybe you don’t think about The Prince’s Bride as a fall movie, but it’s an extremely cozy film that exudes all the wholesome, whimsical vibes of fall. Plus, you can quote the whole movie along with your partner, and what’s better for date night than that?

You can stream The Prince’s Bride via Disney+, Prime Video and Apple TV.

Harry and Sally

Even the movie poster for Harry and Sally makes this a fall movie, so go ahead – put it on the list. The classic romantic comedy, starring our queen Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, is so incredibly cozy and comforting to watch, and the transition through all the seasons will really get you in the fall spirit. Bonus points if you or your partner are wearing a Harry sweater.

You can stream Harry and Sally via Prime Video and Apple TV.

Hunting for good will

How do you actually like the apples? Hunting for good will is a perfect fall movie with all the foliage, math, and New England romance. A movie that’s just *chef’s kiss*. (Plus, there are two Robin Williams movies on this list if you still need the cozy factor.) Plus, you and your partner can try out your Boston accents all evening. Don’t forget to grab a Dunkin’ Pumpkin Spice Coffee to watch.

You can stream Hunting for good will via Max, Prime Video and Apple TV.

Against all rules

After all, it’s fall and football season, and this heartwarming classic, set during the turbulent civil rights era and about a newly formed football team, will give you goosebumps. Against all rules is just so beautiful and Denzel Washington really shines.

You can stream Against all rules via Disney+, Prime Video and Apple TV.

Jerry Maguire

OK, another football film. While Jerry MaguireThe 4000’s plot spans a long period of time, and all that talk of football season — and the romance between Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger — is sure to put you in the mood for a fall evening. Show me the money!

You can stream Jerry Maguire via Prime Video and Apple TV.

So, what vibe are you feeling? Romantic comedy? Romantic comedy plus football? Drama? Drama plus football? It’s got it all and it’s all cozy.
