10 “While you wait and are patient, the Nine Worlds laugh at us!”

Thor (2011)

Like many other prominent figures in the MCU, Thor has undergone significant character development since his introduction. As such, there are elements of his early characterization that can now be viewed in a different light, particularly in his first MCU appearance. After attacking the Frost Giants and being rebuked by Odin, Thor impetuously declares that Odin “Wait and be patient, the Nine Worlds are laughing at us!”

Considering the personal development seen in Thor’s MCU story, it is fair to say that what was once considered a good sign of his impatient and war-hungry character no longer represents him. The line is testy and betrays Thor’s violent and unruly streak, which ultimately leads to his banishment to Earth. While it remains a good indication of who Thor was back then, it hasn’t aged well as the character has matured.

9 “Who is Richard?”

Thor: The Dark World (2013)

More than a decade after its publication Thor: The Dark World continues to stand out as one of the least funny MCU films. Not only does it see the God of Thunder face off against Malekith, but it also sees Thor reunite with Jane Foster. After the pair’s romance falters, Thor later reveals himself to be jealous of Jane dating another man, responding to her brief phone call with him with the mere demand: “who is richard?”

Considering that The dark world usually portrays Thor in a very serious light, the quote has not aged well. This makes him seem not only possessive and jealous, but also decidedly unreasonable in subtle ways. As such, the line has aged pretty poorly, especially considering the way society has evolved to understand problematic behavior in relationships.

8 “Eat my hammer!”

Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)

Despite the great excitement surrounding the release of the film, Thor: Love and Thunder proved to be one of the less popular offerings of the Multiverse Saga. Among other things, the film was criticized for its tone, which treated a decidedly dark and emotionally rich narrative in an overly comedic and silly manner. One example of this is the treatment of Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor arc, which culminated in her most triumphant moment being capped off with the catchphrase “Eat my hammer!”

Taken on its own, the slogan has not aged too badly. However, if you think about Love and Thunder Overall, and considering that this moment is one of Foster’s last acts before her death, it seems even worse than when it was released. The moment feels both forced and somewhat disrespectfuland it embodies the tonal problems with Love and Thunder.

Thor: The Dark World (2013)

Thor: The Dark World had many problems, but the way it built on the stories of its characters was commendable. Perhaps no character has undergone more development in The dark world as Loki, who transformed from an out-and-out villain into a reluctant anti-hero. Later in the film, Loki sacrifices himself to save Thor, with the God of Thunder tearfully telling his brother, “I will tell father what you did here today,“ as he dies in his arms.

Within minutes, however, this emotional moment had aged poorly. At the end of the film, it is revealed that Loki did not die after all, and it is later shown that he took the opportunity to dethrone and impersonate Odin while leaving his father behind on Earth. Considering that what was once Loki’s most heroic moment turned out to be a slightly insulting deception, it’s safe to say that Thor’s emotional reaction hasn’t aged too well..

6 “I lost my hammer yesterday, so this is still fresh in my mind.”

Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Thor: Ragnarok saw a comedic Thor become an MCU hit, but there are some quotes that have been retrospectively recontextualized in subsequent films. Shortly after finding himself on Sakaar, Thor is relieved to discover that his opponent in the Grandmaster’s arena is the Hulk. Relieved to see his fellow Avenger, Thor begins updating the green giant on recent developments. Part of his update includes the line, “I lost my hammer yesterday, so this is still fresh.”

After Infinity War And Thor: Love and Thunder Upon further exploration of Thor’s connection to Mjolnir, the line has taken on a new aspect. The casual way it is delivered does not match the devastation and grief Thor feels over the loss of Mjolnirsince it’s mentioned in passing. It may not be a huge issue, but it’s certainly frustrating to hear Thor so flippantly announce something that he later admits was really disturbing.

5 “Noobmaster? Hey, it’s Thor again.”

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

As Avengers: Endgame served as an epic and unforgettable conclusion to the MCU’s Infinity War saga, it is not usually a film that is remembered for its comedic moments. A moment that seemed somewhat funny at first glance has actually become subtly tragic thanks to additional context and societal growth. After defeating Thanos in Infinity WarThor has gained weight and is threatening a person online after he insulted Korg.

Thor’s rant at Noobmaster69 once seemed pretty funny, but considering the emotional weight of Thor’s lowest point, his threat comes across as both vicious and downright sad. Seeing an Avenger stoop so low as to threaten an unseen player over a bit of name-calling obviously has deeper implications for his character’s state of mind. Instead of being as funny as it once seemed, the quote is now a sad reminder of Thor’s darkest hour.

4 “Maybe your arm is in Valhalla.”

Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)

Among the many questions that Thor: Love and Thunderthe overuse of comedy is usually the biggest. There are many examples of jokes that barely came across in the film, but there is one that seemed funny at first. After Thor discovers his long-time friend Sif bleeding and missing an arm on a battlefield, he explains to her that she will not go to Valhalla if she dies after the battle. He tries to comfort her, saying: “maybe your arm is in Valhalla.”

As funny as the quote may seem at first glance, it is actually quite insensitive. Considering the larger context of Thor and Sif’s relationship and her condition when he finds her, this is a heartless reaction to a close friend who was seriously injured. Even though the reaction to this sentence may not have been entirely justified, the joke just doesn’t come across as it was obviously intended.

3 “Know your place, brother!”

Thor (2011)

A prime example of some of the MCU’s best character development, Thor has undeniably changed a lot since his introduction to the franchise. Thor begins with a scene in which an angry Thor leads a rash attack on the home of the Frost Giants, causing family tensions. When Loki expresses his concern about their chances of success, Thor simply replies, “Know your place, brother.”

The dynamic between Thor and Loki is one of the most complex in the entire MCU, but the line paints the hero in an uncomfortable light. As later films and TV shows in the MCU delve deeper into how this treatment affected Loki, the quote stands out even more as an example of Thor dismissively treating his brother. It may have seemed harmless enough at one time, but it has now become evidence of Thor’s contribution to Loki’s villainy.

2 “You are no match for the powerful…”

Thor (2011)

Shortly after Thor’s introduction into the MCU, he is banished to Earth for defying Odin. Weakened and injured by Jane Foster’s car, Thor wakes up in a hospital surrounded by doctors trying to treat him. In response, Thor attacks them, throwing several doctors across the room and declaring that they “no match for the powerful…“ before he succumbed to sedation.

Thor’s violent reaction to humans is telling, as are the words he uses when they finally subdue him. The quote contains an element of contempt, suggesting Thor’s sense of superiority over humanity.which forms an important part of the foundations of his MCU story. When you compare it to the journey where he settles Asgardian refugees among humans, his previous domineering approach to humanity takes on a different aspect, meaning the quote has aged poorly.

1 “He never fought me twice.”

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Avengers: Infinity War is packed with fleeting moments of comedy, with Thor being a great source of hilarity despite the numerous tragedies that befall him. After announcing that Thanos never fought him, Rocket corrects the God of Thunder. Thor responds by saying, “well, he never fought me twice.“This refers to the beginning of the film, when Thanos defeats Thor and kills Loki with a surprise attack.

As funny as the quote is, it had aged poorly at the time Infinity Warthe credits rolled. During the film’s climactic battle, Thanos actually faces Thor a second time, defeating him again and achieving his ultimate goal. Thor’s confident claim that he will defeat Thanos the second time around seems particularly misplaced in hindsight, making it one of the MCU’s most blatant accusations.
