10 newborn puppies thrown from a car near a California animal shelter are reunited with their mother

A group of 10 newborn puppies were rescued and reunited with their mother after a man allegedly dumped the three-week-old pups into bushes near the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center.

The puppies — which shelter staff have since named after desserts — were abandoned on a road leading to the center at 28095 Hillcreston around 2:30 a.m. on July 24, the shelter said in a post on Facebook. The road is located near a wilderness area, leaving the puppies vulnerable to coyotes that roam the area.

A few hours after being abandoned, Chip, Caramel, Mint, Maple, Chocolate, Cookie Dough, Butterscotch, Cookies n Cream, Ripple and Coffee were discovered in a vinyl puppy pool by a volunteer dog owner when the dog alerted him to the puppies’ location by dragging him toward a bush.

The puppies were immediately taken to the animal shelter, where they were nursed back to health and placed in foster homes, the shelter said in its August 7 post.
