CRIPPLE CREEK, Colo. (KKTV) – Emergency crews responded to the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine near Cripple Creek to reports of multiple people trapped underground after an elevator malfunction occurred Thursday afternoon.

Officers received the call around 12 p.m. on Thursday. Upon arrival, first responders learned that eleven people were in an elevator about 500 feet (150 meters) below the surface. This elevator was brought back to the surface. The Teller County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that one person was killed in the incident. Several were injured, but officials did not disclose the extent of the injuries.

Another 12 visitors and a tour guide were on a tour of the mine at a depth of 300 meters.

Multiple units assisted in the rescue, including Divide Fire, the Colorado Springs Fire Department and the Teller County Sheriff’s Office, as well as state responders dispatched by Colorado Governor Polis.

“I have spoken with the Teller County Sheriff and County Commissioners and will remain in touch as this rescue operation progresses. The state is supporting Teller County and providing resources to save the mine’s residents. We will do everything possible to help the county ensure a quick and safe resolution of the situation,” said Governor Jared Polis.

At 6:31 p.m., Polis said a mine rescue team and a transportation inspector were en route to the mine to assist with rescue efforts.

At around 7 p.m., officials confirmed that the elevator was repaired and they were removing people from the mine. The 12 visitors and their tour guide were safely returned to the surface and were uninjured.

According to the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety, tourist mines and transportation equipment should be inspected daily. “Any inspection checklist should include, at a minimum, checks for proper ventilation, soil conditions and control, electrical hazards, general mine hazards, etc.”

The Mollie Kathleen Goldmine posted on its website: “Recently the Mollie Kathleen experienced a tragic event. We would like to extend our prayers and condolences to everyone involved. We would also like to thank all the first responders and rescue workers who helped us during this difficult time. Mollie Kathleen will remain closed until further notice.”
