Steps after a car accident in Sacramento

While you can’t predict a car accident, you can prepare for it. Keeping a car accident checklist in your glove compartment can help you stay organized and calm when an accident happens. This guide can tell you what to do, what to avoid, and how to protect your rights. You are not alone after an accident, whether minor or serious.

Here’s what to do after a car accident:

  1. Stay calm – Stay at the scene of the accident and make sure everyone is safe. Check yourself for injuries first, then others. Stay calm and try to keep your composure.
  2. Bring to safety – If possible, pull your vehicle over to the side of the road and turn on your hazard lights to warn other drivers. Wait for the police in a safe place.
  3. Call 911 – Report the accident to the authorities immediately. The police will document the incident and collect information that will be included in the official file.
  4. Exchange information – Provide names, phone numbers and insurance information to the other drivers involved. If possible, take photos of the vehicles, license plates and other important details.
  5. Avoid admitting mistakes – Be factual when speaking to the police. Do not admit guilt or apologize, as this can be used against you.
  6. See a doctor – Go to the hospital or your GP immediately. Prompt medical attention can help identify and treat injuries that may not show symptoms right away.
  7. Notify your insurance company – California has deadlines for reporting accidents. Contact your insurer immediately and follow their instructions.
  8. Talk to insurance adjusters – You may receive a call from the other party’s insurance company. Provide only the information requested and do not take a statement or accept a settlement offer without consulting an attorney.
  9. Organize your documents – Keep all accident-related documents together, including police reports, medical bills, information about the other driver, and treatment plans.
  10. Contact our car accident lawyers – If you have any questions or need assistance, call us at (888) 488-1391. We offer free consultations to discuss your accident without obligation.
