What to do after a car accident in Patterson?

It’s impossible to predict a car accident, but you can prepare for it. Keeping a car accident checklist in your glove compartment can help you stay calm and organized after a car accident. Your rights can be protected when you know what to do and what not to do. If you have any doubts, call us at (888) 488-1391. After a serious accident, you are not alone.

The following steps can help you and your family after a car accident, whether you are an injured victim or the loved one of a deceased victim:

  1. Go to a safe place – If possible, pull broken-down vehicles to the side of the road. Turn on your hazard lights to prevent further collisions. Then find a safe place to wait for the police.
  2. Stay calm – Stay at the scene of the accident and make sure everyone is OK. Check yourself for injuries first, then check others. Stay calm and don’t admit blame.
  3. Call 911 – Call the police to report your accident. They can document the incident, gather information, and put it into an official report.
  4. Exchange information – Exchange names, phone numbers, and insurance information with the other drivers involved in the accident. Take photos of the vehicles, license plates, and other important details.
  5. Don’t admit guilt – Do not admit guilt to the police either. When speaking to a police officer, simply describe what happened. Describe the accident in as much detail as possible.
  6. Seek medical treatment – Go to the hospital or your GP immediately. Prompt medical attention can help reduce the damage you suffer from injuries. Tests and scans can identify internal injuries that may not yet show symptoms.
  7. Report it to your insurance company – Most insurance companies have deadlines within which you must report an accident in California. Call quickly and follow the agent’s instructions for reporting your accident.
  8. Talk to insurance adjusters – After an accident, you may receive a call from the other party’s insurance adjuster. Do not give out more information than necessary. Do not take a statement or accept a settlement offer before speaking with an attorney.
  9. Create a file – Keep accident-related documents organized. Your file should include a copy of the police report, medical bills, the other driver’s information, treatment plans for injuries, and any other documents you’ve collected related to the incident.
  10. Call our car accident law firm at (888) 488-1391. We offer free consultations so you can discuss your car accident without risk or obligation. Our California car accident lawyers can determine if your case has merit, help you talk to insurance companies, and assist you in filing a personal injury claim if necessary.
